Chinese scientists have found that the relationship between physical activity and a lower risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is not uniform across populations. In a landmark study drawing on the China-PAR project, researchers analysed data from a large cohort and discovered that the protective effect of exercise is significantly modified by an individual’s predicted cardiovascular risk. For those at low or moderate baseline risk, higher levels of physical activity were strongly associated with fewer cardiovascular events.
