Chinese scientists have found that the digitisation of government services is having a measurable impact on how firms organise their production. In a new study published in Economic Modelling, researchers Zhixuan Shen, Wanli Li, Mengmeng He, and Xi Wen demonstrate that China’s push toward “digital government” is encouraging companies to deepen their vertical specialisation—the practice of focusing on core competencies while outsourcing non-core stages of production.

The study, titled “From Red Tape to Digital Tape: Digital Government Construction and Corporate Vertical Specialization in China,” suggests that the transition from cumbersome paper-based administration to streamlined digital processes is reducing transaction costs and informational asymmetries. This allows firms to more confidently engage in fragmented, specialised production networks rather than maintaining vertically integrated operations out of necessity.

For a country that has long identified supply chain resilience as a national priority, these findings are strategically significant. They imply that the benefits of digital government extend well beyond administrative convenience.
