China’s Steel Decarbonisation Blueprint: Sector-Coupled Modelling and Regional Hydrogen Roadmaps

A new modelling framework from Chinese researchers maps a credible path to deep decarbonisation for the steel sector, coupling regional hydrogen strategies with system-level energy planning to transform the world’s largest producer.

Chinese scientists have developed an integrated energy system model that pinpoints how the nation’s steel industry—responsible for roughly 15% of China’s total carbon emissions—can significantly reduce its carbon footprint by 2030 and beyond. The research, published in Applied Energy, combines sector-coupled energy system modelling with regionally differentiated hydrogen strategies, recognising that a one-size-fits-all approach will not work across China’s diverse industrial geography.

The analytical framework treats steel production not as an isolated sector but as part of a wider energy ecosystem, accounting for interactions with electricity grids, hydrogen supply chains, and regional resource endowments.
