China’s Analytical Reach: Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry for Regulatory and Research Markets

EXPEC 5231 GC-MS/MS Triple Quadrupole Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometer

As Chinese instrument makers move up the value chain, triple quadrupole GC-MS/MS systems are becoming a new battleground for domestic substitution in food safety, environmental monitoring, and pharmaceutical analysis.

Mass spectrometry has long been a bottleneck in China’s laboratory infrastructure, with imported instruments dominating high-sensitivity applications. The EXPEC 5231, developed by Hangzhou EXPEC Technology, represents a direct challenge to that dependency — a fully domestic triple quadrupole GC-MS/MS built for trace-level quantification.

The instrument combines a cold-point-free GC/MS interface with an optimized electron ionization source and a triple quadrupole mass analyzer. This architecture supports multiple scan modes — including full scan, SIM, SRM, and MRM — giving operators the flexibility to handle both unknown identification and targeted quantitation on a single platform.

Operationally, the EXPEC 5231 integrates with the GC2000 gas chromatograph and Mass Expert software for automated tuning and batch processing. For labs running high-throughput pesticide residue screens or pharmaceutical impurity profiling, this reduces the manual calibration burden and standardizes output.

What matters beyond the specs is procurement logic. A domestic triple quadrupole system at competitive pricing changes the calculus for provincial food safety labs and TCM analysis centers that previously had no domestic alternative in this sensitivity class.

It also signals capacity. EXPEC, part of the FPI Group, has been scaling production and after-sales service networks — a prerequisite for displacing established foreign brands in government tenders.

Why it matters:
This instrument is a test case for whether domestic suppliers can meet the repeatability and detection limits required by regulated environments. If they can, the procurement landscape for analytical instruments across China will shift permanently.
