Chinese scientists have found a rigorous, safety-first method to identify which of the nation’s coal-fired power plants could be viably retrofitted for nuclear energy. Published in Applied Energy, the study by Ganpeng He and colleagues introduces an assessment framework that prioritises structural integrity, cooling capacity, grid connectivity, and population safety zones above all other considerations. Rather than assuming every coal site can be repurposed, the model applies a strict multi-criteria filter to shortlist viable candidates, ensuring that existing infrastructure assets are not overestimated in their nuclear potential. This aligns squarely with China’s broader strategy of peaking coal use while preserving sunk capital in the power sector.
