Chinese scientists and policy researchers have mapped a critical but often overlooked consequence of the nation’s rapid low-carbon power transition: a profound shift in employment structure that varies sharply by region, skill level, and gender. In a study published in Energy Policy, Yuan Yuan, Xiaowen Yang, Jiahai Yuan, and Haonan Zhang provide a granular analysis of how China’s pivot away from fossil fuels and toward renewable energy sources is reshaping labour markets from coastal manufacturing hubs to inland resource-dependent provinces.
The research moves beyond aggregate national figures to reveal a nuanced mosaic: while high-skilled jobs in technology, engineering, and green finance expand in urban centres, mid-skill and low-skill positions in traditional energy sectors face significant displacement. Crucially, the study disaggregates these trends by gender, finding that women, who are heavily represented in administrative and service roles within the power sector, may be disproportionately vulnerable to job losses unless targeted retraining policies are implemented.
