China Sets the Rules of the Game: First National Consensus on Animal Exercise Studies

Chinese scientists have published the nation’s first expert consensus statement on basic research methodologies for animal exercise intervention studies, a joint effort by the Exercise Science branch of the Biophysical Society of China and the Metabolism and Genetics branch of the Genetics Society of China. Published in the Journal of Sport and Health Science, the document addresses a long-standing weakness in preclinical research: the lack of standardised protocols for exercise interventions in animal models.

Led by an extensive team of Chinese investigators alongside international collaborators including Anthony Rosenzweig of Harvard Medical School, the consensus provides a framework for designing, executing, and reporting exercise studies in animals used to model chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disorders. Without such standardisation, results across laboratories have been notoriously difficult to compare or replicate, slowing the translation of basic discoveries into clinical or public health strategies.

This initiative signals China’s strategic ambition to lead in the burgeoning field of exercise medicine.
