Automating Protein Analysis: The OR-KNA 100 and the Logic of High-Throughput Labs

OR-KNA 100 fully-automatic Kjeldahl nitrogen analyzer

In food, feed, and fertilizer testing, the Kjeldahl method remains the gold standard for nitrogen and protein determination. The OR-KNA 100 automates this process, removing operator variability from a procedure that is both chemically delicate and essential for regulatory compliance.

Laboratories running routine nitrogen analysis face a persistent tension: the need for high throughput versus the risk of procedural error. The OR-KNA 100 addresses this by automating the entire workflow—acid and alkali addition, distillation, titration, and data logging—through a microcomputer-controlled interface. Distillation and titration run concurrently, neutralizing ammonia as it evolves to minimize loss and reduce total run time to as little as three minutes per sample.

Its specifications indicate an instrument built for precision at scale. A recovery rate above 99.5% and repeatability within 0.5% RSD are expected for this class, but the real differentiation lies in the engineering choices: intermittent alkali addition prevents violent reactions that could drive off ammonia, while adjustable distillation power improves recovery from low-concentration samples. The colorimetric endpoint detection uses three-wavelength RGB analysis, displaying standard acid consumption and protein content in real time.

Safety features are not afterthoughts in Chinese analytical instrumentation—they reflect a response to operational reality in busy labs. The OR-KNA 100 monitors distillation flask temperature, cooling water flow, and pressure, and will halt heating if the flask runs dry. Double liquid-level control and a safety door lock further reduce the risk of accidents during unattended operation.

The instrument stores up to 10,000 test records and offers optional wireless data transmission. For regulated environments, permission-based access control aligns with GMP 21 CFR Part 11 requirements, enabling full audit trails. This is no longer a luxury—it is emerging as a baseline expectation in export-oriented food testing and pharmaceutical quality assurance across China’s industrial base.

The OR-KNA 100 reveals an infrastructure logic: as Chinese manufacturers move upward in value, they are embedding traceability and compliance into the instrument itself, not leaving it to downstream paperwork. The use of corrosion-resistant piping with a three-year warranty and ABS housing suggests attention to total cost of ownership—a signal that domestic suppliers are competing on longevity as well as capability.

For a lab running dozens of nitrogen determinations daily, the choice is no longer between automation and budget. The OR-KNA 100 makes that trade-off obsolete.

Why it matters:
For procurement managers and lab operators, the OR-KNA 100 collapses several cost centers—operator time, rework from human error, and compliance overhead—into a single machine. Its feature set aligns with what food safety regulators and export certification bodies now demand, without requiring a premium price point.
