Power from the Roof: Mapping China’s Urban Solar Potential with Precision
A new high-resolution assessment of rooftop photovoltaics across Chinese cities gives policymakers and investors the data needed to accelerate the country’s renewable energy transition.
Chinese scientists have completed one of the most detailed evaluations to date of the development potential and comprehensive benefits of urban rooftop photovoltaics across China. Published in Applied Energy, the study by Ming Zhang, Yiwen Geng, and Wenwen Wang applies high-resolution data and a physical modeling approach to estimate how much solar power Chinese cities can realistically generate from their rooftops — and what that would mean for the national energy mix.
The research moves beyond broad national estimates by accounting for building geometry, shading, local irradiance, and structural constraints. This level of granularity matters: urban rooftop solar is one of the fastest-deployable renewable resources, but its true contribution depends on how accurately potential is mapped at the city scale. By quantifying both energy yield and broader benefits — emissions reductions, grid integration value, and investment returns — the study gives provincial governments and project developers a firmer foundation for capacity planning.
For China, this work supports the national strategy to peak carbon emissions before 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2060. Distributed solar is central to that trajectory.
