Hong Kong – Hong Kong’s first astronaut, selected for China’s prestigious space program, is set to embark on her mission in space as early as 2026, the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) announced this week. The astronaut, a former police officer and chief inspector, is among the latest group of astronauts chosen to join China’s growing space exploration efforts.
In June 2024, Hong Kong and Macau were included for the first time in China’s astronaut recruitment program. A total of 10 new astronauts were selected, including two from the special administrative regions—one of whom is the Hong Kong candidate, who stood out in a highly competitive process that saw more than 80 hopefuls from the city. The newly selected astronauts are undergoing rigorous training, which includes preparing for space travel, mastering space flight theory, psychology, and the ability to adapt to the harsh environment of outer space.
A Unique Selection Process
The Hong Kong astronaut, a policewoman with a doctorate and a background in technical services, was chosen after a stringent selection process. She previously served in the force’s secretive technical division and had been seconded to the Security Bureau, where her skills in handling complex systems made her an ideal candidate for the position of payload specialist. This role involves overseeing high-tech equipment and managing critical space-based tasks, requiring both scientific expertise and strong problem-solving abilities.
According to the CMSA, the Hong Kong astronaut has adapted quickly to the demanding conditions of space training. Lin Xiqiang, deputy director general of the CMSA, reported that she and her fellow astronaut from Macau have integrated seamlessly into the team. “Since joining the team in August 2024, the Hong Kong and Macau astronauts have been diligently training in space technology and have made significant progress in their preparations,” Lin stated at a press conference.
The Hong Kong astronaut, along with her Macau counterpart, will serve as payload specialists, working with on-board equipment and supporting experiments during their missions. Their first mission is expected to take place in 2026 at the earliest, marking a historic moment in Hong Kong’s contribution to space exploration.
China’s Expanding Space Ambitions
The announcement comes at a time when China’s space program is making significant strides in both human spaceflight and scientific research. China has already launched multiple crewed space missions, developed its own space station, and is planning future missions to the Moon and Mars. The inclusion of Hong Kong and Macau astronauts further underscores China’s commitment to broadening participation in its space initiatives.
During a recent press conference at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in the Gobi Desert, CMSA officials revealed that the Shenzhou-20 mission is set to launch on Thursday. The mission’s objectives include rotating crew members, conducting space science experiments, and performing extravehicular activities, as part of China’s ongoing efforts to expand its capabilities in space.
Looking Ahead
As the Hong Kong astronaut prepares for her historic mission, experts are eager to see how her journey will unfold. Her selection is not only a personal achievement but also a symbolic step for Hong Kong, demonstrating its growing role in global science and technology. With more astronauts from Hong Kong and Macau joining China’s space efforts, the region’s participation in space exploration is poised to increase in the years ahead.
For now, all eyes are on the Hong Kong astronaut, whose hard work and dedication could inspire future generations to reach for the stars.
